Even on a San Francisco Giants team with one of baseball’s most recognizable names – a pair of shaggy Brandon Crawford shorts – Camilo Doval stood out with his beaded stripes.

Doval’s clothes are gone now, though. While the team was in San Diego last week, he got a lot of haircuts, even with three cuts on the side of one of his temples.

There were no superstitions, no lost bets. The reason was simple.

“I wanted a new look,” Doval said before Thursday’s match, Erwin Higueros interpreting. It became very difficult. I couldn’t wash it every day like I wanted to. And when I washed it, it took a long time to dry.”

The difference is significant: Many of Doval’s teammates thought the team might have added a new player. “They didn’t recognize me,” Doval said. “But then he said he loved it.”

Athletic trainer Andrew Bailey confirmed this, saying, “When Camilo came in, I said, ‘Who’s the new guy?’ But they wanted to change it up a bit and I think it looks good.”
