The 39-year-old Ace, a frequent Cy Young Award winner, appears to be the culmination of his ninth All-Star selection Sunday as he enjoys a successful comeback this season since a long spell on Tommy John’s surgery.
Verlander has been resting for seven days since he threw eight innings in a double kick in a 2-0 win over the New York Mets last week. Since being recognized by the White Sox in a 7-0 defeat on June 18, he has conceded just once and hit six more than 15 innings in a series of victories against the Yankees and Mets first.
Breakout ace Tony Gonsolin (10-0) of NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers has won the major league-low 1.54 ERA in his competition with rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki and teammates Chicago Cubs.
Gonsolin is set to be a shoo-in to make his first All-Star team this weekend, and another tough exit could only add to his chances of starting the National League at his home ground at Dodger Stadium on July 19th.
Miami Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara (9-3, 1.82 ERA) looks like Gonsolin’s biggest rival for that honor.
With a bigger lead in AL East than its long-time rivals, Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees have opened a four-game series at Fenway Park against Xander Bogaerts and the Boston Red Sox.
Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.99 ERA) plays for the Yankees, who come with a good record in baseball. This is the first of seven meetings between the two groups 11 days before the All-Star break. He hasn’t played since the Yankees took two-thirds of Boston home on April 8-10 to start the season.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said Wednesday that he realizes the price could rise to sign Judge to a long-term contract for the first half of the slugger.
The judge rejected an eight-year contract worth $ 230.5 million to $ 234.5 million before the season, and now leads the way in the top 30 homers.
“We did what I think was the best,” Steinbrenner said. “It took a lot of numbers, yes, but it was re-established what he meant to the agency. It was a combination of both. And we did nothing.”
Dylan Cease looks set to continue his hot run as he takes on the White Sox side by opening four home games against the Detroit Tigers.
Quits were 4-2 and 4.24 ERA after a poor start on May 24, when they dropped seven times in three innings in Boston.
Since then, they are 3-1 and 0.45 ERA in the first seven. He stopped playing five times without letting go of the run he got, and allowed himself to run once in his last two games, both of which he won.
They are 7-3 and 2.51 ERA this season.
