NASA’s largest telescope has begun sending images from space with better precision and infrared clarity compared to the Hubble Space Telescope. The new James Webb Space Telescope was launched in December 2021 on the Ariane 5 rocket and the first images released this week by NASA give a glimpse of what a telescope can do.

The telescope has been in existence for only one week and features an original glass with 18 layers of beryllium gold-plated glass that combines to form a 6.5-meter (21 ft) large glass. Compared with the Hubble glass 2.4 m (7.9 ft) the James Webb Space Telescope’s light bulb is almost seven times the size of about 25 square meters.

“The dawn of a new era in space began with the world’s first look at the potential of NASA James Webb Space Telescope, an alliance with ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency). The video was broadcast on 10:30 am EDT (14:30 UTC) on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. has been identified, as well as the official source of all Webb’s scientific activities, selected by an international committee from NASA, ESA, CSA, and the Space Telescope Science Institute.

In contrast to Hubble, which sees near ultraviolet light, visible, and near infrared light (0.1–1.7 μm), JWST will see very low, ranging from light (red) to infrared (0.6–28.3) μm ). The telescope should be very cool, below 50 K (−223 ° C; −370 ° F), so that the infrared light emitted by the telescope alone does not interfere with the light emitted. It is located in the vicinity of the Sun – Earth L2 Lagrange, about 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 mi) from Earth, where its five-layer shields protect it from the sun, Earth, and Moon. ”

“The James Webb Space Telescope contains about half the mass of the Hubble Space Telescope. JWST has a 6.5-meter (21 ft) gold beryllium coating glass made of 18 different hexagonal glasses. The glass has a cleaning area of 26.3 m2 (283 sq ft), while 0.9 m2 (9.7 sq ft) is hidden by secondary support equipment,[9] providing a collection area of 25.4 m2 (273 sq ft). This is five times the size of a Hubble glass 2.4-meter (7.9 ft) in diameter, which covers an area of 4.0 m2 (43 sq ft). The glass has a gold coating to reflect infrared light and this is coated with a thin glass for durability. ”
