A White House representative told CNN that President Joe Biden was not formally invited to lead a delegation to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II next week, but only the President and First Lady were.
The White House announced on Sunday that the first lady would be accompanying Biden.
Previous state funerals have allowed the officeholder to send a delegation of government officials, such as the one for former South African President Nelson Mandela.
The Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall starting on Wednesday, and as Buckingham Palace had already confirmed on Saturday, her state funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on September 19.
The Queen’s coffin arrived on Sunday after a six-hour trip from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse. The 96-year-old British monarch passed away on Thursday at her country estate in Scotland’s Balmoral.
