The IRS is getting ready for a facelift, and the White House has announced that President Joe Biden plans to propose Danny Werfel, a former budget officer and private sector leader, to manage the organisation.

Werfel previously worked for Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush as the Office of Management and Budget controller and the acting commissioner of the IRS, respectively.
Werfel will supervise the organization’s proposal for $80 billion in IRS financing over the following 10 years, as implemented under the Inflation Reduction Act in August, if ratified by the Senate.

Former IRS Commissioner: new position is “a hard responsibility.”

The appointment of Biden comes at a crucial time for the organisation. The IRS continues to struggle with a backlog following another challenging filing season. The IRS reported that as of November 4th, there were 4.2 million unprocessed individual returns.

In a blog post published on Thursday, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins stated, “I look at the figures and see millions of taxpayers that are still waiting for their returns to be processed.” For some taxpayers, tax refunds are a lifeline, and they are crucial for practically everyone.
It’s a “challenging assignment,” according to Mark Everson, a former IRS commissioner and current vice chairman at Alliantgroup. He hopes for a prompt confirmation from Congress.

He claimed that tax administration had become overly politicised. “I’m hoping [Werfel] can tone it down a bit and just discuss what’s working, what isn’t working, and what needs to be changed.”

Charles Rettig, the IRS commissioner, will leave the organisation on Saturday.
