It took about 72 hours for the Summer League to respond to the 2022 campaign.
Chet Holmgren shot and knocked out three of the most famous wrestling games in its history, marking the first flag that was planted in a contest between the top three. Paolo Banchero assisted for a 17-point, six assists in the two nights after winning the Rockets, then looked well with a 23/6/6 line against the Kings in his final performance in Las Vegas. As the NBA landed in the desert, the top two selectors experienced hype.
The start of the Summer League did not sound good to Jabari Smith Jr. Vote number 3 only scored 10 points in his first 10 shots, which did not significantly affect Orlando’s disappointing end. Smith just went 9-for-29 off the field in his first two games, and when he scored 19 hard-hitting, nine attempts on Monday night against San Antonio, his actions did not turn on social media like this. of Banchero and Holmgren.
Not to mention Smith’s arrival quietly disappointed, however. The Houston midfielder highlighted a number of talents on both sides, and honed especially as a defender. As we look forward to 2022-23, Smith’s biggest value as a rookie could be out of the box.
So what can we expect from Smith’s rookie season after his first three Summer League matches? Let’s get into another movie and watch.
Smith considered the outfit as “safe” in the 2022 class among other things because of the strong security in one year at Auburn. Smith is an active and alert defender, who brings a controlled structure like an internal anchor. He circled cautiously and easily adapted in his first three Summer League matches, a skill that should be interpreted as quickly as possible against real NBA competition.
Smith should be more than just self-defense. He plays directly for an All-Defense player who can defend the ring and skate around. The final skill is the centerpiece of Smith’s appeal. It combines light feet with 7’2 ′ ′ wings and does a great job of blocking the way as it moves its legs straight along the edges.
Smith should help resolve another issue for Rockets coach Stephen Silas. The Rockets defense was, well, noisy last season, while Houston lacked the necessary connections and staff to reduce the opposition. Smith should support the papers on Alperen Şengün’s defense weaknesses in the future, with the addition of No. Smith’s defensive skills and attitude will be welcome to Silas and his staff. It will probably make it a very competitive nightmare.
Smooth shooting
While Smith’s defense has become his playing card in the Summer League, professional writers (including Sports IllustratedJeremy Woo) also demonstrated his innate ability as a shooter. Smith is 6’10 “very comfortable and has the ability to lift his body to the end of shows and handoffs. Smith was free to climb and shoot everything he does and get off the dribble. Player, and if Summer League is any sign, he will not suffer and a line of three NBA points.
Smith should enjoy the trials alongside guards Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. Auburn sales have the opportunity to become the first in NBA history to record 100 and 100 blocks three times in a season.

We should not sell Smith as an ordinary player-and-shooter. He manages to score from all three ground levels and his most impressive tape comes in challenging situations. Smith is a master shooter around a free throw line, with a smooth flexible jump that is made easy with his release space. Smith has invested heavily in all of his NBA career. Such skills could be valuable if the Rockets could return to the game in the 2020s.
Unanswered questions
I would still be holding the brakes on Smith’s Rookie of the Year chances despite a strong comeback in the Summer League. He won’t get as much of his stuff as Banchero, and even though Houston didn’t have his backyard skills, it’s hard to imagine Smith currently working as a frustrating fulcrum. His brace did not lead to enough dancing for the defenders, and he did not have enough power to pull both teams as a driver.
Smith excels at scoring in tight spaces and is able to drill jumpers from one or two dribbles. But we should not expect him to break defenses like a rookie. Considering its high performance in some areas, such shortcomings are a minor problem.
One last thought
The Rockets are a lottery team as it is set up here, with a lot of young people competing against them in what is expected to be a brutal Western rally. But there are reasons to be happy in Houston for almost two years being removed from James Harden’s business.
Houston’s selection from Brooklyn looks good in a month’s time. The 2020-21 Tournament reached Green. Smith is the most recent prospect to enter the barn, and there are some interesting additions to Şengün, Porter and Jae’Sean Tate, among others. Houston is set to have a cap cap this coming summer, and to prevent an unexpected jump, another lottery talent is coming up next June.
Rockets GM Rafael Stone turned two unsatisfied stars and dangerous choices into the future of young talent, good organization and economic flexibility. His patience could pay off in the next decade, especially if Smith emerges as an All-NBA talent. We will get our first results in the coming months after a thrilling Summer League match.
