On Monday, Major League Baseball will continue its 2022 All-Star Game festivities in Los Angeles with the Home Run Derby at Dodger Stadium. Leading the charge is New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who is trying to become the first to win three consecutive Derbies.

Alonso won in 2019 and last year (no All-Star events took place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Joining Alonso in this year’s eighth round are the Nationals’ Juan Soto, Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves, Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, Albert Pujols of the Cardinals, Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez, José Ramírez of the Guardians, and former Dodger and Ranger Corey Seager.

A version of the Home Run Derby

Here’s how Derby works today:

  • Each contestant gets three minutes in the first and second rounds to hit as many home runs as possible. Competitors in the final, or third round, get two minutes.
  • Each competitor gets a 30-second bonus at the end of each control period, and that time can be extended to 60 seconds if the competitor hits approximately 440 feet.
  • Each competitor gets one 45-second time limit for each qualifying period.
  • Any round that ends in a tie is considered a 60 second “run” with no timeout or bonus time.
  • The winner receives $1 million for a prize of $2.5 million.
